SALT (HALO) THERAPY

What is Salt Therapy?

Salt therapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses the inhalation of dry aerosol salt vapor, rich in essential minerals and sodium chloride, to heal horses of various respiratory and skin conditions. As the horse draws the vapor deep down into its lungs, the salt is able to do it’s greatest healing. It acts as an anti bacterial agent, loosening mucus and dissolving bacteria and pollutants lodged in the respiratory tract. This, ultimately, widens airways and soothes inflamed areas, which enables the horse to breath better, as well as transport essential minerals directly into the blood stream.

Salt, also plays a vital roll in many other aspects of equine health. Horses need 9g of sodium and 36g of chloride to maintain optimal health. Without enough salt, muscles will not contract, food will not digest and the heart will not beat. As a result, the use of salt therapy may reduce the reliance of antibiotics and other harmful medications.

It is also ideal for horses in competition, as the sodium chloride hydrates cells, which aids the horse to rest, recover and preform better. In addition, the non inhaled particles landing on the skin have a great benefit. They help to balance PH and induce the reparative and regenerative process in the skin, increasing rigidity and stimulating cell growth and micro circulation. It is known to be extremely beneficial for summer sores and mud fever.

What are the benefits of

Salt Therapy?

  • Loosens mucus

  • Improves lung function

  • Increases blood oxygen

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Combats infection

  • Balances-surface liquid

  • Improves stamina

  • Aids in recovery

Salt Therapy relieves

the symptoms of:

  • IAD (Inflammatory or Allergic Airway Disease)

  • LAD (Lower Airway Disease)

  • RAO (Recurrent Airway Obstruction)

  • Various Inflammatory Skin Conditions
(mud fever, cracked heals, summer sores)

  • Mineral deficiencies

  • Travel sickness

  • Anxiety

Horses suited for this therapy:

  • Horses suffering from various health issues (respiratory and skin conditions, etc.)

  • “Worrier” style horse that competes on a regular basis (it is useful for both pre and post racing)

  • Older horses, that may be suffering from depletion of mineral salt (aids in rejuvenation of the cells that are lost in their day to day work loads)

  • Horses that are low in electrolytes (achieves rapid hydration at a cellular level)

  • Healthy horses (this therapy may be used at a preventative tool to maintain optimal health)

It is easier to stop illness from happening in the first place than to repair the damage after it has happened.

What happens during a treatment?

The horse enters the salt chamber, where a fine mist of salt vapor, rich in essential minerals and sodium chloride, is distributed, via the halo generator. All the horse has to do is breath and feel the relief. The treatment takes 15 min. and it is recommended to be preformed over 3 consecutive days. However, the client may use the therapy as often as he/she feels is necessary.
